Trio in court for defrauding Harare city

THREE fraud suspects appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi yesterday, accused of defrauding the City of Harare in a bogus housing scheme.

Robert Makwiza, Robson Mugwagwa and Patricia Rusike appeared in court for allegedly forming the Sunungukai Housing Cooperative using false documents.

They were granted bail of $100 each and will appear in court on August 2.

The complainant in this matter is the City of Harare represented by Addmore Nhekairo, the director of housing.

Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi alleged that the trio identified a vacant lot behind the Nazarene Church in Warren Park.

In 2016, the City of Harare, in line with government policy, converted housing cooperatives to payment plans.

The trio allegedly obtained a fake registration certificate number 4867 for their supposed cooperative.

It is alleged that on June 1, 2023, the defendants submitted an application to the City of Harare requesting regularization of the open space they had encroached upon.
