“They were not limited to buying and selling products. They had pledged allegiance to ISIS, the Islamic State, and money was being used to fund that organization, sent back home to further that cause,” D’Iorio said in his speech to the jury this week.

“You will hear evidence that Naim Akl had realized that… the group had pledged allegiance to ISIS,” he said. “He was planning to go to the authorities and betray the others. Our position is that the others devised a plan to prevent that from happening: a plan to kill Naim Akl and his family.”

D’Iorio identified the gunman as Anand Nath and Suliman Raza as the getaway driver, following orders from Naqash Abassi. All three are charged with one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. The charges have not been proven in court.

Another confidant in the group heard Nath describe the murders and will testify, D’Iorio said. Police found ISIS propaganda on the defendants’ phones and records on Raza’s phone from a search for “What are the sentences for a hit-and-run driver?” he said.
