Suicide of Ebonyi student: Relatives of the deceased threaten me – Prof Enyi

Professor Amechi Enyi of Ebonyi State University, Abakiliki, has denied having anything to do with the death of Miss Favor Ugwuka, who committed suicide.

Enyi, a professor at the Department of English Language, stated that the deceased’s relatives jointly threatened him before the incident.

According to Enyi, the question paper for the last exam of the course (English Statistics) revealed that the deceased student simply copied three questions.

He stated this, answering questions from journalists on Friday in Abakaliki, stating that it was incorrect to allege that his death was related to academic activities.

Recall that a woman who identified herself as the mother of the deceased student was seen in a trending video blaming the professor for her daughter’s death.

Giving his version of events, the lecturer said: “I am Professor A U. Enyi of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. It’s unfortunate, it’s quite unfortunate that the girl ended up the way she did. I was shocked when I heard the news.

“It is not true that his death is related to an academic issue, I do not see how someone who was not victimized, someone who failed an exam, would decide to take their own life. So the first question one should ask in this circumstance should be: was she a victim of it?

“And of course you know that she may not have been the only person who took the exam and that some (other) people may have failed as well, so it’s not true and, really, that was my first reaction. How could she have decided to take her life, that is, if she took her life?

“How could she have decided to take her life if she was not victimized in the exam?”

He added: “Yes, I met this student in February 2024, after we uploaded our second semester results. The results were already approved by the school because before we uploaded the results so that students could access the results, the school management would have approved them.

“Then the mother called me one night and told me that she was hunting her daughter for witches and how could her daughter have passed all the other courses and then failed mine?

“And when I tried to explain the procedure to hear about such an accusation, she refused to listen to me, so I had no choice but to disconnect the call.

“And I didn’t dwell on it anymore because the university has a process to handle these matters. According to university rules, the exam does not belong to the professor, we deliver the results, student scripts, questions and marking scheme, so all of this is the property of the university and is verifiable.

“So if someone feels aggrieved, the process of withdrawing the documents is there. And what such an aggrieved person should do is not threaten my life, telling me that she is from Nsukka and that they will take care of me.”
