Match Preview: Hawks vs Lions

Vic Fans, we’re back and there’s a lot to unpack in this powerful showdown.

Vic Fans, we’re back and there’s a lot to unpack in this powerful showdown.

So, Lions fans, it’s time to fly to this week’s game preview.

The last time we saw each other

Last time: Hawthorn 15.8 (98) d Brisbane 11.7 (73) Round 13, 2023

The last time we encountered the mighty fighting falcons, it wasn’t our best afternoon. After trailing by 17 points at halftime, the Hawks turned the game around with a dominant six-goal third quarter and got away with it.

However, that’s history and this week our guys are ready to rewrite history. Sunday afternoon will be our first game against the Hawks at Marvel Stadium since 2000 and it’s a matchup that will likely shape the second half of the season for whichever team wins.

Not to mention we have a pretty solid record at Marvel, winning nine of our last eleven games there, and we know that with our Vic fans out in force, our Lions will be ready to roar!

Excited

Brandon Ryan’s Lions debut!

Sticksy Ryan will come full circle when he runs out to Marvel Stadium.

The 200cm forward who played three AFL games for the Hawks after being selected in the 2023 mid-season Rookie Draft, arrived at the Lions den on the final day of the Continental Tires AFL Trading Period. last year, which saw Jack Gunston return to the Falcons.

Now, after five VFL appearances in the maroon, blue and gold, the 26-year-old gets his chance at AFL level as a Lion.

We wish him the best of luck and know Lions fans will be eager to see what he can bring against his former team.

Appropriate debut as a lion for Brandon Ryan

Games we want

Kai Lohmann vs. Will Day

They may not line up next to each other, but both men will be pivotal in their own right on Sunday.

Day, who had a delayed start to the season, has regained his form after four games. The 22-year-old overcame stress fractures in his foot and put in his best performance with 27 disposals and one goal, despite his team narrowly missing out on their fourth win in five games.

On the other hand, our man Kai has consistently made his mark, playing every game for the Lions this year. The lively forward scored a career-high five goals last week, earning him a Rising Star nomination. Lohmann is starting to deliver on his promise just when the Lions need their young talent to step forward. When these two promising players face off, it promises to be an exciting competition.
