SUV explodes in Van Nuys parking lot;  1 injured

A pickup truck apparently exploded, leaving debris scattered in a parking lot near Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way.

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A van exploded and left debris scattered across a Van Nuys parking lot Thursday night, injuring the man who lived in the vehicle.

The incident was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. near the busy intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way, according to authorities.

The Toyota vehicle was completely destroyed and small butane canisters were seen among the rubble after the explosion.

A pickup truck apparently exploded in a parking lot in Van Nuys Thursday night.

The incident occurred in a Super King Market parking lot, near a Pollo Campero restaurant. Crime scene tape cordoned off the area.

Authorities say the man had propane tanks inside the car and they exploded after he lit a cigarette.

He suffered minor injuries.

Crews cleaned up the scene and the car was impounded.
