A Majorcan restaurant collapses in Spain’s Balearic Islands, killing at least 4 people

A two-story restaurant collapsed on the Spanish island of Mallorca, killing at least four people and injuring 16 in this tourist area.

Seven people were injured “very seriously” and nine were seriously injured, emergency services said on social media platform X, Thursday local time. They were transferred to several hospitals in the island’s capital, Palma.

Emergency teams are finalizing search and rescue operations and securing the area around the Medusa Beach Club, the beach restaurant that collapsed, a local police spokesman told radio station RNE around midnight.

“That’s why we now ask for silence because we need silence to see if we hear anyone,” he said, adding that he could not rule out that someone was still trapped.

“The terrace has fallen, probably due to excess weight,” he said.

He added that the causes were still being investigated.

The first calls came in around 8 p.m., he said.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene, emergency services said, adding that some psychologists had been called.

“I am closely following the consequences of the terrible landslide that occurred on Palma beach,” said the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in X.

Sánchez said that he had spoken with local and regional authorities and added that the Government is willing to help “with all the means and troops that are necessary.”

“I want to send my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured,” he said.

Spanish state broadcaster TVE showed firefighters working to clear areas of the Medusa Beach Club in Palma around 11:30 p.m. and ambulances at the scene.
