Former APC aspirant defects from NNPP and wins party’s government candidacy

One of the former governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Gbenga Edema, has announced his defection from the party to join the New Nigeria People’s Party.

Edema made the announcement on Wednesday at the NNPP gubernatorial replacement primaries held in Akure, where he was chosen as the party’s candidate for the November 16 state governorship election.

Edema, was dissatisfied with the outcome of the ruling APC primary election, held on April 20, 2024, and petitioned the primary election appeal committee,
headed by former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar.

But the committee confirmed the results of the exercise, which Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa won.

The former Chairman of the Ondo State Petroleum Producing Areas Commission said he quit the APC following the alleged impunity, which he said was demonstrated, during the last primaries of the ruling party.

He said: “It is common knowledge that the purported primary election conducted by the APC leadership on 20/04/2024 for the selection of its gubernatorial candidate for the November 16, 2024 election lacks these attributes and as such, cannot be described as democratic. This act of impunity should not be supported and should be allowed to continue in our political system.

“It is true that you cannot give what you do not have. The demise of the APC is just around the corner, as is its sibling, the People’s Democratic Party, from which it took power. It is on this note that I hereby formally announce my immediate resignation from the APC. I hereby pitch my tent with the NNPP, a truly progressive and people-oriented party. This is a party for the immediate future. I make port!

Expressing his gratitude to the NNPP leadership for handing him the party ticket, Edema declared that he was willing to serve the state if elected as the next governor of the state, saying that he would defeat the incumbent governor.

“We are therefore using this medium to send a resignation notice to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his APC cohorts that effective February 24, 2025, Government House, Alagbaka will no longer be available for use.

“With the NNPP, we are delivering a more authentic and people-oriented government for all the good people of Ondo State as reflected in our manifesto which will be available in due course,” he stated.
