The man suspected of killing S’porean Audrey Fang in Spain

Everything you need to know about Mitchell Ong

On April 10, 2024, the body of Singaporean Audrey Fang, 39, was discovered in Abanilla, Spain, after she had been brutally murdered.

Six days later, the Civil Guard arrested a man later identified as Singaporean Mitchell Ong, 43, in Alicante.

As the investigation progressed, the mystery surrounding Ong’s identity and his relationship with the victim was revealed piece by piece.

Below is everything that is known so far about Mitchell Ong, the suspect in Ms Fang’s murder.

1. He describes himself as a 6’2″ tall gym bro.

On his Instagram account @strongestasian, where he has around 14,200 followers, Ong describes himself as a 1.88m tall “Asian powerhouse”.

He also claims to be a “bro” of the International Federation of Fitness and Bodybuilding (IFBB) but clarifies that he is not a professional.

However, his feed is filled with numerous photos of him working out at the gym.

According to his Instagram posts, he is also a frequent traveler: he has been to Greece, Poland, and several places in Spain.

On his now-defunct website accessed through the Wayback Machine, he adds that he is an “EDM connoisseur” and an “avid music festival attendee.”

On Instagram, he is seen attending music festivals such as Tomorrowland and Electric Daisy Festival (EDC).

2. Mitchell Ong received his education in Singapore.

According to his business, finance and lifestyle website, Mitch Direct, Ong “attended several prestigious schools in Singapore.”

In particular, he went to Nanyang Primary School, Anglo-Chinese (Independent) Secondary School and Raffles Junior College.

He then furthered his studies at the University of Singapore (now National University of Singapore), where he majored in Economics.

His website also said he was an economics professor.

3. He lived in a condominium in Bukit Timah.

Shortly after Ong was identified by Spanish media, 8world News reported that he was living in a Bukit Timah condominium.

A journalist who visited his apartment discovered that Ong was married and that local marriage records showed that he registered his marriage in June 2012.

Additionally, he has a daughter in elementary school.

Ong’s elderly mother lives with the family in their Bukit Timah condominium. She also has two older brothers, Ong’s former business partner told 8world News.

Meanwhile, his father passed away.

4. Mitchell Ong is registered as an owner or shareholder in six companies.

Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) records obtained by 8world showed Ong was registered as an owner or shareholder in six companies.

These businesses span a variety of industries, including:

  1. Financial and insurance management
  2. Enrollment and education support services.
  3. Marketing and retail sale of computer equipment and office supplies.

However, only one of these companies is still operating. It is an insurance and financial management company founded in 1972, where Ong was registered as sole director in 2009.

When journalists visited the registered address of the company, they found an educational center operating on the premises. The staff also claimed not to be familiar with the company’s name or know Ong.

5. He is reportedly a long-time friend of Audrey Fang.

A former colleague of Fang said the victim had mentioned Ong a few years ago, Spanish news outlet La Verdad reported.

Levante, another Spanish news site, added that it was obvious that the two knew each other as Fang would not have confidently gotten into the car with Ong if he had not done so.

However, the exact nature of their relationship is not clear even to her loved ones, as she was a very private person.

A report by The Straits Times (ST) mentioned that Ms Fang had told her family that she might meet a friend in Spain, but did not share any further details.

Additionally, a Civil Guard spokesperson told ST that the two could have had a romantic relationship, pointing to a bouquet of flowers seen in Ong’s hotel room during their search.

6. Mitchell Ong is Audrey Fang’s insurance agent.

Ms Fang’s family was later shocked to discover that Ong was listed as her agent on two insurance policies she had purchased in 2015.

This revelation came after Ms Fang’s brother and cousin went through her belongings to find clues about her connection to Ong, ST reported.

ST reported that the letters showed that Ms Fang had purchased two AIA investment-linked policies through Ong in August 2015.

Ong’s name was listed as Ong Cheong Yi on the letters, and Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported it was his Chinese name. He also went by several other names, including Mitch Ong and Mitchell Ong.

Ong had worked as a financial advisor at AIA from 2014 to 2019. On his now-defunct website, Ong described himself as a “financial services expert.”

7. He is listed as a beneficiary of Audrey Fang’s CPF.

On May 16, the Cieza court confirmed Ong as the sole beneficiary of Ms Fang’s CPF savings, which reportedly amounted to S$498,000, according to La Verdad.

The judge had previously requested financial information about Ms Fang and Ong from Singapore authorities to determine Ong’s status as their CPF beneficiary.

The CPF is a mandatory social security savings plan funded by contributions from employers and employees. Upon the death of a person, the savings are transferred to the nominees on the list.

Prior to the judge’s request, investigators found a note on Ms. Fang’s iPad indicating her intention to name an unnamed person as her CPF beneficiary.

The note, supposedly dated March 24 (less than three weeks before she was found dead), said:

“I wish to clarify that my decision to nominate you for my CPF was made because you are my long-time friend and my trusted confidant.”

Spanish police also confirmed that attempts were made to make changes to Ms Fang’s CPF account in March before her trip to Spain.

8. He is currently in prison in Spain.

It may be “months” before Ong is formally charged, sources close to the investigation said, according to CNA.

The prosecution is still reviewing evidence and police investigations and the police report is still incomplete.

Meanwhile, the accused is detained in a prison in Murcia and has so far refused to give a statement, which has made investigations difficult.

He was labeled a flight risk as he is a tourist in Spain with no family or friends in either Alicante or Abanilla, where Ms Fang’s body was found.

Ong remains in pretrial detention, despite appearing before a judge three days after his arrest.

In Spain, a person can remain in preventive detention for a maximum of two years, extendable for two more years in the case of serious infractions.
