Women’s marathon world record
2:11:53 Tigist Assefa (ETH) Berlin September 24, 2023

Tigist Assefa’s marathon world record of 2:11:53 set in Berlin last year has been ratified by World Athletics.

The Ethiopian surpassed the previous mark by more than two minutes at the BMW Berlin Marathon on September 24, becoming the first woman to run within 2:13 and 2:12, and obliterating the world record of 2:14:04 that had been established. by Brigid Kosgei from Kenya in Chicago on October 13, 2019.

During Assefa’s record-breaking race, a large group of top contenders ran together in the early stages, covering 5km in 15:58. 13 women were still in touch with the lead when they reached 10 km in 31:45.

At km 15, reached in 47:26, Assefa and his compatriot Workenesh Edesa had managed to open a slight gap. Less than two kilometers later, Assefa was alone in front and reached the halfway mark in 1:06:20, comfortably within world record pace.

Assefa, still looking incredibly relaxed and composed, covered the 25-35km section in a remarkable time of 31:02. Spurred on by the knowledge that the world record was in his bag, Assefa picked up the pace in the final kilometers and crossed the finish line in 2:11:53.

“I hope that my performance will serve as a motivation for the young athletes of Ethiopia and that the world record a year before the Olympic Games will give our country a boost for Paris,” Assefa said.
