Patrick Etolu Athletics Championship held in Soroti

The Patrick Etolu Athletics Championship has reached its climax at the Soroti City Sports Ground, with local athletes competing in various events.

The annual event organized by the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) is in memory of the late Etolu, a former national high jump champion and also Uganda’s first Olympian and Commonwealth medalist.

Etolu, who was then a primary school teacher in Soroti, won Uganda’s first medal, a silver at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. She died in 2013 aged 78.

The eighth edition of the annual gathering that brought together primary, secondary, club, tertiary and individual athletes was attended by family members, politicians, public servants, clerics and Ugandan athletics officials.

“Every year, the Uganda Athletics Federation organizes this type of gathering to remember the contribution of the late Papa Etolu to this nation. Now it is his role as the next athlete to make sure the same applies to you as well,” Alalo said.

Uganda Athletics Federation vice-president Lawrence Kavuma said the meeting has the dual purpose of commemorating Etolu’s life but also identifying talents in the region.

Julius Okello, Etolu’s first son, who spoke on behalf of the family, praised the Uganda Athletics Federation for organizing the championship.
