Three alleged gangsters arrested in Machakos

Three suspected gangsters were arrested on Wednesday and a suspected stolen motor vehicle was recovered in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

The suspects, aged 27, 26 and 30, were captured during a botched robbery incident in Mlolongo township on Thursday.

A fourth suspect fled on foot.

Police said the incident was reported to Mlolongo Police Station as robbery and recovery of an alleged stolen vehicle incident at 9.06am.

Police said officers assigned to the station while patrolling near the Cooperative Bank within Mlolongo Municipality encountered a gang of four attacking a lady and advanced towards them.

Seeing the police, the thugs ran in different directions with the officers chasing them.

Three of the thugs ran and got into a getaway vehicle, a black Toyota Ractis, but were blocked.

The gang, according to police, fought and injured officers who resisted arrest as they attempted to be subdued.

Two police officers were injured during the incident; one suffered swelling in his right leg near the knee while the other suffered chest pains.

Police said the getaway vehicle’s license plate had been altered with stickers.

The suspects were found in possession of a variety of digit and letter stickers, a bunch of assorted keys, ten master keys with a file, eight mobile phones of different models, three crowbars, a hook and a machete.

Police said a 33-year-old woman who was being attacked when the officers attacked was robbed of an Oppo A20 mobile phone, Sh11,000, a wristwatch, a bag containing her national identity card and an ATM card.

Police said not all of the items had yet been recovered.

She was hit and injured in the face and hands, police said.

They said the suspects will be arraigned at Mavoko courts on Friday.

Officers said they will be charged with robbery with violence, assaulting police officers, resisting arrest, preparation to commit a felony and being in possession of property suspected of being stolen.

The vehicle has been detained at the Mlolongo Police Station as evidence pending verification of details and ownership.

In another incident in the same Athi River East sub-county, gangs broke into Katani Secondary School in Mavoko and stole assorted properties valued at Sh117,000.

Police said the incident was reported at 8:48 a.m. Thursday.

“The principal of Katani Secondary School reported that he had a break-in incident at the school. Police attended the scene and it was established that today, May 23, 2024, at around 2.30 am, five robbers armed with crude weapons entered the school. the school through the main door and broke into the scholarships, principal, vice principal, director of study, examinations and secretariat offices,” a police officer aware of the incident told the Star on Thursday.

He said the attackers stole Sh49,000 cash, an HP laptop valued at Sh35,000, a school mobile phone valued at Sh12,000 and an assortment of calculators valued at Sh27,000 from the treasurer’s officer.

Police said that at the examination office, thieves stole an HP laptop worth Sh35,000, while from the secretary’s office they took Sh8,000 in cash.

All the stolen items are valued at Sh117,000.

Police said there was a night guard on duty during the incident.

“The security guard said he was next to the dorms during the incident,” the officer said.

The scene was visited, processed and documented by crime scene officers from the SNP police station.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.

At press time, no arrests had been made.
