‘You either have it or you don’t’: South Africa’s Broos reveals Bafana Bafana’s big problem ahead of Nigeria clash

South African national team coach Hugo Broos has lamented Bafana Bafana’s scoring problem ahead of their crucial qualifying matches against Nigeria next week, reports..

Broos and his boys will take on three-time African champions Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Friday, June 7.

The Super Eagles, despite serious injury problems, will be favorites to claim their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Coach Broos has vowed to “shock” new Super Eagles coach Finidi George in Uyo in the same way he struck fear in former Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier of this year.

However, to achieve this, Bafana Bafana need to score goals, something the former AFCON champions have struggled with in recent weeks.

Before their 3-3 friendly draw against Algeria in March, South Africa had only managed 13 goals in their previous 17 matches in all competitions. Broos’ team found the opponent’s goal more than once in just three games and failed to score in nine games during that streak.

The 72-year-old tactician admits his Bafana Bafana team lacks a killer instinct in front of goal, a quality he regrets not being able to tolerate.

However, the Belgian coach reveals that he invited Lyle Foster and Iqraam Rayners to help solve that problem.

“I think it’s a problem, maybe we don’t have these guys to score goals. Now we are thinking about two or three years ago and it is not easy,” Broos said, according to Farpost.

“You either have it or you don’t. I can’t give anyone the power to score goals, it’s a talent you have. So I think now with Rayners with 15 goals it’s not so bad.

“Now we have Foster, who is used to playing in a high-level competition. He scores every time he gets the chance. Then he can score.

“So let’s hope those two guys can help us now with the two games because two years ago we weren’t going to Qatar on goal difference.”

Broos added: “And the goal difference at the moment is not good either, as we scored two and conceded three. So, it’s up to us to increase that and hope that Lyle and Iqraam help us.”

Barring last-minute changes to plans, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana are expected to land in Uyo on Wednesday, June 5, two days before facing Nigeria.
