There will be no ceasefire in Gaza until the ‘destruction’ of Hamas – POLITICO

The reaction comes a day after US President Joe Biden unveiled a new three-phase ceasefire proposal that he said Israel had offered to Hamas, which would lead to the release of all hostages and finally permanent combat.

The first phase of the proposal would last six weeks and include a “complete” ceasefire, a withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of the Gaza Strip, the exchange of several Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and the return of bodies of Israelis killed by Hamas, Biden said.

Describing the proposal, Biden said Hamas no longer posed a risk to Israel as its military capabilities had been decimated by Israeli forces since October.

The international community has welcomed the prospect of a suspension of hostilities, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres encouraging “all parties to seize the opportunity for a ceasefire” and French President Emmanuel Macron , has called for “lasting peace” in the region.

In a statement published by Reuters, Hamas declared its readiness to “positively and constructively address” any proposal involving the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
