A former student at Gray Junior Primary School in Gqeberha has accused one of the school’s vice-principals, who died in 2021 from Covid-19, of sexually abusing him more than 36 years ago.

Andrew Hughes, 47, a teacher at Western Province Preparatory School in Cape Town, alleged that maths teacher Charles Pautz touched him inappropriately during extra lessons when he was in grades 4, 5 and 6 between 1988 and 1990.

Hughes mustered up the courage to first disclose Pautz’s alleged sexual misconduct during a meeting of his school’s leadership team around 2018, where a psychologist was also present.
