Two village chiefs jailed for killing lion

Two village chiefs from Dete, Hwange District, Matabeleland North Province, were sentenced to 12 months in prison for setting a class one wire trap to trap a lion.

Elias Nyoni (51) and Zenzo Ndlovu (47) were also ordered to compensate Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (ZimParks) in the amount of $20,000.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), a report was submitted to the police on May 17, 2024 following suspicions that a lion may have been killed because the collar’s tracking signal appeared to be stationary from May 12, 2024 until May 17, 2024, when a report was submitted. made. The NPA said:

The Police and ZimParks authorities went to the scene to locate the lion but only found the carcass of a donkey and a class one wire trap with lion skin.

The investigations carried out in the illegal resettlements (Muraga) linked the accused with the lion. The accused managed to recover the tracking collar and a class one wire trap used to trap the lion.

The tracking collar was destroyed beyond repair. Further investigations led to the recovery of three bags of game meat, as well as 16 claws and four dandelions. The lion was valued at $20,000.

Nyoni and Ndlovu pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to 12 months in prison, of which 6 months were suspended for 5 years.

The defendants were also ordered to compensate ZimParks in the amount of US$20,000. The traps, claws, teeth and first-class game meat were confiscated to the State.
