Tigray industry shows recovery with 227 new businesses

Despite the current challenges, Tigray’s industrial sector is showing signs of recovery with the launch of 227 new companies in the last nine months, according to Industry Minister Melaku Alebel.

Shuttered industries are also reopening in Tigray. In March this year, 2Merkato reported that the Mekelle Industrial Park was back in operation. The park is located in Mekelle, Tigray, 760 km from Addis Ababa. It began operations in 2017 and specializes in Clothing and Textiles and 100% exportable products. After the peace agreement between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was signed on November 2, 2022, the IPDC team confirmed that the industrial park was not damaged during the conflict and that the investors’ property and machinery remained safe.

2Merkato also reported in November last year that a steel manufacturing industry would also be built in the city of Mekele through a collaboration between Ethiopian and Chinese investors, with an estimated cost of Birr 6 billion. The project reportedly attracted the attention of other private and association investors, who saw it as a positive example to follow for mutual benefit and national development. The expected impact of the project includes the creation of employment opportunities for approximately 6,000 people.
