‘Let’s allow these young people to make mistakes’ – Laryea Kingston

The head coach of the national under-17 team, the Black Starlets, Laryea Kingston, has called for support for his players moments after their victory over Benin in the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship.

The Black Starlets beat their Beninois counterparts 2-0 in their final group match of the ongoing tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to top Group A.

Despite the victory, concerns arose over some elementary mistakes made by the players in the two matches played so far.

Since then, the team’s head coach, Laryea Kingston, has jumped to the defense of his players, insisting that they are children and should be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them.

“In this part of the world we focus more on results. But this age group is just for development. Any victory or qualification for a major tournament is an advantage,” Laryea said.

“For me, we have to develop the boys, give them confidence to play. If my player makes mistakes at this age, it is part of his development.

“We have to encourage them to be confident, make mistakes and learn from mistakes. So, for me, stopping them from doing what they are doing is not the best because it is not good for their development,” he added.

Laryea’s team has reached the semi-finals of the tournament and will face the second placed team in Group B after their final group matches on Wednesday.
