DC Area Forecast: Hot today, strong storms possible late; more comfortable tomorrow

A somewhat subjective rating of the time of day, on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10: As hot as last weekend, but only for one day. Storms likely won’t arrive early enough to hinder the heat.

  • Today: Scorching heat. Afternoon storm? Maximum temperatures: between 95 and 100 degrees.
  • Tonight: Scattered thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon. Lows: Upper 60s to low 70s.
  • Tomorrow: It’s not as hot and the sunlight increases. Highs: Mid to upper 80s.

Here we go again with the great heat, but only for today. It will be tough to catch the record for the date at Reagan National, which is 101. But Dulles will likely break its calendar day record of 95, while BWI could match or beat its daily record of 99. Storm chances increase as we go . through tonight, then Thursday and Friday will cool to more typical summer levels, before another warming trend this weekend.

Today (Wednesday): Mostly to partly sunny and brutally hot. Morning temperatures quickly rise from 80 to near 90, then afternoon highs reach around 95 to 100. Moderate to high humidity should raise the heat index to 100 to 105. Rain or Isolated thunderstorm after about 2 pm, but the increased chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms should wait until after about 5 pm. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely tonight. Some of them could be severe with damaging winds and large hail. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, mainly north of DC. Tomorrow (Thursday): Any lingering cloud cover and showers early in the morning should give way to partly to mostly sunny skies in the late morning and afternoon. The highs are between 80 and 80 degrees, much more tolerable. The humidity is somewhat lower thanks to a light north wind, but it is not refreshing and dry air. Confidence: Medium-High

Mainly sunny Friday with temperatures and humidity still in control as highs reach between 80 and near 90. Then clouds and humidity increase Friday night with some showers and thunderstorms possible during the afternoon or overnight and lows near 70. Confidence: Low-Medium

He weekend The weather is shaping up to be partly sunny, warmer and quite humid. Highs are near the upper 90s to mid 90s with the possibility of scattered showers and storms both day and night, although the exact timing of any showers and storms is very uncertain.
