Makerere University Investigates Law School Exam Satirizing Speaker Among

The vice-chancellor of Makerere University has called for an investigation into a set of exams for students at Makerere Law School that lampooned Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.

Professor Oloka Onyango, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, subjected his students to an essay initiated by Speaker Among during their Principles of Constitutional Law II examination. The exam was taken by freshers on May 11, 2024.

Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has asked the principal of the law school to investigate whether the article meets minimum academic standards and whether there are ethical issues that do not fall below expected standards.

The principal is also expected to investigate the last three series of exams set by the same professor and submit a report to the Senate president.

In the essay, the Among spokesperson is seen trying to defend herself against the sanctions imposed on her by the United Kingdom and criticism from Internet users. The speaker introduces a bill called the ‘Speaker’s Bill’ aimed at punishing critics of her.

“Hurt by the recent sanctions imposed against her by the United Kingdom (UK) government and the criticism that followed on social media, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. “Anita Annet Among, has decided to fight against those who “write malicious reports” about her,” the essay reads.

“Thus, on Monday, May 6, 2024, he presented what he called a “President’s Bill” titled “Antisocial Media and Other Imperialist Agents Bill,” which contains, among others, the following provisions,” the rehearsal.

In the essay, President Among expels ‘Joelo’ from parliament for trying to oppose the newly introduced bill.

“You, Joelo, shut up. Are you one of those vagabonds that haunt my life? I am the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Queen of Bukedea and Conqueror of the British Empire. In this House I can do whatever I want,” the essay adds.

The Makerere University Senate is said to have met on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 to discuss the report on the examination.
