Kerry community ‘absolutely devastated’ after nurse dies after caesarean section

Tributes have been paid to a young nurse at Kerry University Hospital who died following a caesarean section on Friday.

Stephy Scaria (née Ouseph), who lived in Abbeyfeale, Co Kerry with her husband and son, tragically died on Friday (June 21) following a caesarean section at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Scaria, originally from India, was a nurse at Kerry University Hospital and her family started a GoFundMe to repatriate her body to her native India.

The GoFundMe has raised more than €70,000, and local parish priest Father Tony Mullins said Mrs Scaria and her family were “regulars” at mass in the parish, with a friendly presence in the community.

“They were regulars at our weekend masses and also at our weekday masses,” Father Mullins said. ‘They were a very kind presence in our community here. People are absolutely devastated.

‘They were a beautiful family, who have to deal with this terrible trauma. Her parents had come to Ireland for the birth of the child and found themselves in this terrible situation. It’s really terrible.’

Parish priest Father Tony Mullins said Mrs Scaria’s family were a “friendly presence” in the town.

“Many people who have come from India have become very critical, in a sense, of our health services, and our hearts also go out to their colleagues.”

A funeral for Mrs Scaria will be held in India on July 1.
