The Ghana Police Service has filed an injunction at the Accra High Court to ban a planned demonstration under the #DumsorMustStop slogan.

The demonstration, scheduled for May 25, 2024 at Revolution Square, aims to protest against the erratic electricity supply in Ghana.

However, Superintendent Isaac Nicholas Kwabena Yeboah, representing the Ghana Police Service, filed an affidavit on May 20, 2024, asking the court to order the organizers to suspend the event completely.

“PLEASE NOTE that this Honorable Court will be moved by Counsel on behalf of the present Applicant requesting this Honorable Court for an order prohibiting the respondents from holding a planned picket set for May 25, 2024 at the Plaza de la Revolución, for the reasons contained in the attached affidavit and for such further orders as this Honorable Court may deem appropriate,” the petition read.

The Ghana Police Service cited security concerns due to the proximity of the protest site to Jubilee House, a designated security zone.

Police have therefore proposed that protesters reconsider the location of their pickets to avoid potential security risks, especially in light of the upcoming elections.

The court is expected to hear the motion on May 24, 2024, one day before the scheduled event.

This development follows a notice of intention to picket received by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command earlier this month, signed by Yvonne Nelson, Selorm Dramani Dzramado and Henry Osei Akoto, who are leading the protest.

The #DumsorMustStop campaign is a citizen-led movement in Ghana protesting against the frequent power outages known as “Dumsor”.

Started in 2015 and led by figures such as Yvonne Nelson, it demands government accountability to solve the energy crisis.

The campaign resurfaced in 2024 following a series of recurring power outages that have affected the nation since early 2024.
