Man arrested for driving under the influence after accident at Funan mall taxi rank

SINGAPORE – A 31-year-old man was arrested after the car he was driving crashed into a bollard at Funan Shopping Center in the early hours of June 24.

Police said they were alerted to the accident involving the car, a truck and a taxi at 6.55am that day at the popular North Bridge Road shopping centre.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving under the influence and other traffic violations. The truck driver, 61, is also assisting in the investigations, police said.

A witness who wished to remain anonymous told Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao that the car, a Mercedes-Benz, collided with the truck before spinning and hitting a bollard at the Funan taxi rank and a taxi there.

Photographs from the moments after the accident show the hood of the Mercedes severely damaged. It had burst open and parts of the car’s bumper had come off.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force said one person was assessed for minor injuries but refused to be taken to hospital.

Fatal road accidents rose to 131 in 2023 from 104 in 2022, with the 2023 figure exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

The annual statistical report of the Traffic Police also showed an increase in the number of fatal accidents related to speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and red traffic lights.
