KZN Police Commissioner Vows to Act Against Officers in Viral Assault Video

JOHANNESBURG – KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said he would take action against officers seen on video assaulting a person in oThongathi.

The video went viral on social media and shows KZN South African Police Service (SAPS) officers attacking a man lying on the ground in what appears to be an unprovoked act on Sunday.

Mkhwanazi has reminded police officers to be aware of their duty and code of conduct and strive to act within the confines of the law at all times.

“Communities must be and feel safe in the presence of police officers and not fear the same officers who are supposed to be their source of refuge. The police can only retaliate with minimal and proportionate force if they find themselves under any form of attack,” said KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
