Thiruvananthapuram: Cheating people by offering them foreign work visas continues unabated. In the latest incident, a couple residing at CRP Nagar in Sreekaryam was cheated of Rs 15 lakh by offering a work visa for the UK. The couple contacted the accused, NP Nishanth, after seeing an advertisement on Facebook about the vacant position of a ‘care assistant’. ‘ in a UK company. The accused promised them the job in four months, after verification of the certificates and other documents. Up to Rs 1 lakh was demanded as advance payment to process the application, which was transferred to the accused’s account earlier this year. A month later, Rs 2 lakh was given as ‘sponsorship certificate’ fee and then Rs 3 lakh as ‘visa facilitation service’ charge. The couple also alleged that the accused had an office in Thrissur, and they visited it to verify things before making the payment. “Finally, Rs 9 lakh was given to the accused in April after he was granted a fake visa. In fact, it was not a visa but a forged document as we were not allowed to fly to the UK using it. We had quit our job here to get a dream job in the UK with a monthly salary of Rs 3 lakh. We ended up losing our hard-earned jobs and also went into debt. Now we are desperate and a case has been registered to recover at least our money,” the victim said in the complaint. Sreekaryam police have launched an investigation after registering a case under Section 420 of the IPC for cheating.
